68th Sacramento City Four-Ball
The 68th annual Sacramento City 4-Ball Championship was contested at the Bing Maloney Golf Course on March 25-26 and April 1-2, 2023.
Play began on Saturday, March 25 with 35 teams competing in a qualifying round to determine the 31 spots for match play. Defending champions, the team of Marc Engellenner and Travis Peterson, received an automatic entry into match play to complete the 32-team field. Medalists for the qualifying round were the team of Ryan Sloane and Taylor Travis with an 8-under 64.
Match play began on Sunday, March 26th followed by Round 2 on Saturday morning, April 1, quarterfinal matches on Saturday afternoon, semifinal matches on Sunday morning, April 2nd, and the final match on Sunday afternoon.
Because of unusual amounts of rain, the weeks prior to the tournament and the week before the second weekend, “lift, clean and place” through the green was in play for the entire tournament. Although the rain held off for both weekends, the weather was blustery and cold. Weather for the second weekend was a bit better, with a little less wind until later in the final match on Sunday.
The final match took place between qualifying round medalists, the team of Ryan Sloane (Campbell, CA) and Taylor Travis (Fremont, CA) and the team of Juan Gonzalez (Antelope, CA) and Keith Okasaki (Sacramento, CA). The match was close all day with Gonzalez/Okasaki taking a 2-up lead on the front nine. The two teams traded birdies on the next three holes with Gonzalez/Okasaki taking a 1-up lead until the 17 th hole. Sloane made birdie on 17 to tie the match. The teams halved the 18 th hole requiring extra holes. Sloane/Travis prevailed on the 19th hole when Travis holed about a 20-foot birdie putt to close out the match.
