Council Bio – Steve Yates

Steve Yates Bio

Steve began playing golf at the age of 5 or 6, more than 66 years ago. Growing up in Sacramento, Steve acquired a junior playing card that allowed young golfers to play the city courses for just 25 cents. The Land Park Golf Course became Steve’s home course, conveniently located just a block from the family home. It was here that Steve’s passion for the game developed, often observing his older brother, Gary, playing alongside local golf legends such as Verne Callison, Ray Arinno, Pete Gutierrez, and Clyde Daniels.

After graduating from Christian Brothers High School in 1971, Steve attended Sacramento City College and married Cindy, his wife, in 1973. Together, they have two children and are proud grandparents to Jordan, who is currently attending Sacramento State University. In 1980, after five years as a driver for UPS, Steve transitioned into the family insurance business, a career that afforded him the opportunity to play in a regular Wednesday golf game at Plumas Lake with several well-known Sacramento golfers.

Currently, Steve serves as the Tournament Director for the Peggy Dodds Memorial / Sacramento City Junior Championship, an annual event held near the Fourth of July. Taking over this tournament is a source of pride for Steve, who continues the legacy of the late Peggy Dodds.

In 2022, Steve was invited to apply for a position with the Sacramento Golf Council, thanks to the encouragement of his friend and fellow golfer, Charles Cheung. After interviewing with Council President Jan Luis and Mike Fleming, Steve was welcomed onto the team, where Mike mentored him in announcing players on the first tee, a role Steve continues to enjoy.

In addition to directing the Peggy Dodds Memorial, Steve is a member of the Player of the Year Committee and actively supports fellow Council members in organizing and running tournaments. His dedication to promoting and fostering competitive, enjoyable tournaments reflects his passion for the game and commitment to giving back.
