Erica Villegas Shines on Back Nine to Capture 2024 California State Fair Women’s Championship
The event was contested at the Bartley Cavanaugh Golf Course, where weather conditions were ideal compared to the scorching 100 plus heat the Sacramento Valley has been experiencing.
The Championship Division concluded on Saturday Day One with seven players scoring under par and leading the field was Sophia Lee (Fairfield) and Erica Villegas (Suisun) tied at 3 under. They were followed by three players tied at 2 under: Sneha Sharan (Sacramento), Sienna Lyford (Roseville), and Tori James (Orinda).
But it was the rock steady play of Erica Villegas that ultimately led her to victory and emerge as the 2024 California State Fair Women’s Champion. She played bogey free golf from the Back 9 on Day One and throughout the balance of the tournament. It was the Back 9 both days where Erica found her scoring opportunities, that led to a -3 score each day. The temperatures may not have been scorching but the golf was sizzling in Round 2 on Sunday’s Back Nine. Erica held the outright lead or was tied for the lead and remain unphased by the scoring charges mounted by Sienna and Sophia. All three players bidied the 15th hole, then Erica birdied the 17th island hole which sealed her win. Her pair of 69’s for a 138 total score demonstrated her superb consistent play.
CONGRATULATIONS ERICA!
The Net Division had a similarly competitive weekend, with seven players shooting under par on Saturday, and eleven scoring under par on Sunday. But it was Diedre Wentworth (Dixon), one of only two players scoring under par both days that allowed her to break through victorious with a score of 68, and a Sunday scoreof 65, giving her a final score 133 for the tournament.
CONGRATULATIONS DIEDRE!
