2023 County Men’s Amateur
On July 15 & 16, 2023 — two of the hottest days of the year — the Sacramento County Men’s Amateur Golf Championship was held at Ancil Hoffman GC. 96 contestants played from the “Gold” tees at 7000 yards.
After the first day (Saturday), 24 players were at par or better, 10 players were -2 or better, and 5 golfers were tied for the lead at -4. The Sunday leaderboard was very active with low scores and many players tied at -6 and -7.
Julian Monas shot a final round 65 to take the clubhouse lead at -7 with several groups still on the course. Finally, Matthew Sutherland (pictured right, with caddie/brother Andrew) birdied the 18th hole to separate himself from the field and won the tournament at -8.
Matthew also won the 2023 Sacramento City Championship last June. Matthew won the 2021 Sac County Championship with his dad, David Sutherland and 1984 Sac County Champion on his bag. He finished 2nd in the 2022 California State Fair Championship. Matthew is from Carmichael, CA and has been playing in Sac Golf Council tournaments since he was 10 years old. Matt now plays for the Fresno State golf team and will complete his senior season this coming year. His current index is +5.
As always, I could not have conducted this tournament without the help of other Sac Golf Council members: Larry Glasmire, Mark Perry, Tom O’Neill, Patty Mitchell, Deb Kanner and Dave Eisner.
