2018 City Women’s Championship

2018 City Women’s Championship

The Sacramento Golf Council proudly announces the results of the 83rd Annual Sacramento City Women’s Golf Championship. The Council wishes to thank each and every player that participated in the event as well as all the staff and volunteers from the Council and from Morton Golf at Bing Maloney that helped make this another wonderful golf tournament. 39 ladies started the weekend with 29 in the Championship Flight, playing at gross, and 10 in the Handicap Flight, playing at net. The Championship Flight played from the gold tees at about 5870 yards at par 73, and the handicap flights played from the red tees at about 5250 yards at Par 72.

Sean Wong, tournament director, would like to especially thank all the spectators and players for their support, and special thanks to all the out of area players for making the long trip to Sacramento on this Father’s Day weekend. Special thanks also to tournament helpers Mike Fleming, Riley Wong and Alice Wong for their hard work, and to George Golden, the tournament director at Bing Maloney.

As has been the case for the last several years, the quality of the field has been very strong, with 20+ players under a 3.0 index, as well as diverse, with top high school players, college players and some post-graduate players.

We had a great weekend with both days playing in the low 80s, and being downright chilly on Sunday morning. On the first day, Alice Duan, a future Washington Husky, carded 8 birdies on holes 4, 6, 8, 11, 12, 14, 15 and 16 before finishing with a 4 under par round of 69 and taking a four shot lead over Nao Bando of Sierra College and Noor Ahmed of the University of Nebraska, with Rei Nakatani, a UC Davis Aggie, one stroke back at 74.

On the second day, Alice played steady golf all day with 2 bogeys to go with her two birdies for an even par 73 to stay four under par, three shots ahead of San Jose State’s Elizabeth Schultz, who had a 71 on the final round for a 145, one under total, the only other player under par for the two days. Also noteworthy was Ellie Bushnell of Granite Bay who fired a final round 69, 12 strokes better than her 1st round score of 81, to sneak into a tie for 7th place. Ellie is going into the 8th grade in the Fall.

Leslie Lang, Julia Hadley, Vicki Philpott, Debra Hopson

Before Alice’s closeout performance in the afternoon, the Council also crowned a new champions in the handicap division earlier in the day. Leslie Lang of Sacramento, a long time player in our golf council events, won her first ever division title with a sizzling net score of 69-65-134 to beat Julia Hadley also of Sacramento by 2 strokes.

Pictured are the top four finishers in the handicap division: Julia Hadley, Debra Hopson, Leslie Lang and Vicki Philpott.

We hope to see everyone back next year!!!
