2013 State Fair Masters

2013 State Fair Masters

11th State Fair Masters Championship at Bing Maloney
This was the first time the State Fair Masters has had over 70 players in the field. This is the first time that we had a hole in one. Congrats to Matt Stoll for acing the par 3 13th hole with a 9-iron in the second round.

This is also the first time that we have had rain, which actually made for a nice break for about three holes. And, this is the first time I have made a mistake about the cutline. If you haven’t heard, we made a mistake on a player’s score and he called in and pointed out the mistake, which let all the 154s, 5 in all, in for this morning’s final round. I was able to get ahold of all five players and they all showed up this morning. This is what I love about golf. I’m pretty sure Ryan Braun would have showed up this morning for his tee time. But the streaks of firsts had to end.

Just when it looked like we would have a first time winner, the match tightened on the last few holes and we ended up with a three way tie for the championship at 2 under par with Jay Weiss holding on to his lead coming in with an even par 72 today, defending champion Jeff Hoffman coming in tough as usual with a 70 and Jamie Looper, scorching the course with a 67, low round of the tournament to leap over 12 guys for a share of the lead.

As some of you may recall Jeff and Jamie were in a two hole playoff last year with Jeff knocking in a birdie on the second playoff hole at 18. Jeff wasted no time this year knocking his short iron to 8 feet and sinking the birdie putt on 17, ending the hard fought match that also saw Ray Hale and Dale Bouguennec holding a share of the lead at one point during the round. This is Jeff’s third Masters title with all three wins coming in playoffs.

As she was last year, Jeff’s daughter Emilee, a high school golfer to watch out for this coming season for Vista Del Lago, was on his bag for the final round, making the win extra special. Congratulations to Jeff and to all the players that made the cut today. Please keep our website www.sacgolfcouncil.org on your favorite list and check back in the next couple of weeks for information about our County 4-Ball in October. Finally, I would like to thank all the help I had this weekend from my co-directors and volunteers for making te tournament run so smoothly, Carissa Shubb, Greg Bisi, Janis Luis, Allen Luis, Riley Wong, Ross Martin and Dorothy Trevethick. Special thanks also to Adam Hart, Morton Golf and the Bing Maloney grounds crew for working hard all week! I hope to see you all back next year!

Thanks so much, Sean Wong Tournament Director Sacramento Golf Council
